New School Safety Infrastructure Standards – To Which Grant Applications Will These New Standards Apply?

Following the recent release of the School Safety Infrastructure Council’s (SSIC) Report, questions were raised concerning the effective date of the new Standards established by the Council.  According to law, these new Standards go into effect on July 1, 2014.  Therefore, towns and municipalities submitting grant applications to the Division of Construction Services on or before June 30, 2014 – to be considered by the General Assembly in 2014 for the 2014/2015 school construction priority list – are not required to include the new SSIC standards.  School districts submitting grant applications on or after July 1, 2014, however, will be required to include the new Standards in their applications.

The Department of Administrative Services strongly encourages Schools districts to review and where possible, implement the SSIC Standards during the school design process, even if not required to do so by law.
