PURPOSE OF CLASS:
In a correctional facility this class is accountable for the supervision and instruction of a group of inmates engaged in the manufacture, production or processing of products or services in the occupation indicated by the subtitle of the class.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general direction of a Correctional Industries Supervisor 2 or other industries official.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Supervises a staff of assigned inmates.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Supervises and instructs inmates in proper methods and techniques of manufacturing process or service, proper use of tools and materials, necessary safety rules and procedures and maintenance, cleaning and repair of equipment; plans and routes work to be performed, assigning inmates to specific tasks; estimates needs and requisitions supplies, materials and equipment necessary; supervises maintenance and/or repair of equipment or arranges for outside service and material; maintains cost, production inventory and time records and makes necessary reports on operations; maintains discipline and enforces security measures within assigned areas; maintains appropriate security procedures for tools, equipment, chemicals, etc.; reviews and evaluates performance of assigned inmates; submits reports relative to inmate disciplinary actions, recommendations for "good time", furloughs, reassignments, etc.; may physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist custodial forces in emergencies; may be required to operate a motor vehicle; performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:
Considerable knowledge of methods, materials and equipment involved in occupation; knowledge of methods and techniques of production planning and control; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral communication skills; ability to interpret plans, blueprints and diagrams where required; ability to keep records and make reports; ability to perform under stress and remain stable in pressure situations; ability to train, instruct and supervise inmates in methods and techniques of the trade.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
General Experience:
Four (4) years of experience in the industry, manufacturing process, services or trade indicated in the occupational subtitle.

GENERAL INDUSTRIES:

Four (4) years of experience in a manufacturing environment involved in the areas of production, production planning and/or quality control which must have included some responsibility for the production output of other workers.
Substitutions Allowed:
[all parenthetical titles except General Industries]
Four (4) years of experience in correctional work, two (2) years of which were assigned to full time training in the area indicated in the applicable parenthetical title.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1.
Incumbents in this class must have reached their 18th birthday.
2.
Incumbents in this class are required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification by the time of permanent appointment.
3.
Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle operator license.
CHARACTER REQUIREMENT:
In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for permanent appointment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:
In addition to good general health candidates must have and retain sufficient strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity necessary to perform the duties of the class. Applicants will be required to pass a physical examination.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to danger of assault or injury from inmates who have access to tools of the trade as weapons and the following discomforts depending upon their industry: loud machine noises, chemical fumes, working in tiring positions, working with dangerous (high speed and/or high temperature, etc.) machinery.
This replaces the existing title of Correctional Industries Supervisor 1 (Auto Mechanics) (Clothing) (Data Entry) (General Industries) (Laundry) in Salary Group CO 08 and 09 approved effective March 13, 2009. (Revised to abolish Title and Class Code Data Entry 2468)
