| PURPOSE OF CLASS: | |||||||||||
| At the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, Connecticut Valley Hospital, this class is accountable for performing a full range of highly skilled duties in operating and providing preventive maintenance and repair to a multi-treatment operation consisting of a Class 3 Water Treatment Plant and a Class 1 Water Transmission and Distribution System with a design flow rate of a least .70 million gallons per day. | |||||||||||
| SUPERVISION RECEIVED: | |||||||||||
| Works under the general supervision of a Water Systems Supervisor or other employee of higher grade . | |||||||||||
| SUPERVISION EXERCISED: | |||||||||||
| May function as a crew leader over maintainers or patients assigned to the Plant. | |||||||||||
| EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: | |||||||||||
| Operates and monitors water treatment and distribution equipment; maintains equipment such as filter beds, metering pumps, chlorinators, raw water pumps, backwash pumps, ash lagoons, transmission mains and valves, strainers and filters used in water treatment and distribution; performs maintenance and repair work on all equipment including valves, motors, pipes, fire hydrants and other machinery; performs daily skilled chemical analyses of water; adjusts water flow rates and chemical feed rates to maintain adequate balance between influent and effluent and proper amounts of chemicals; maintains records and prepares reports on tests and general plant operations; performs maintenance of building and grounds that affect water distribution system; participates in facility Cross Connection Control program, backflow device testing and flushing of distribution system; performs related duties as required. | |||||||||||

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY: |
|||||||||||
| Knowledge of water treatment, water transmission, distribution and engineering principles; knowledge of repair and maintenance procedures on pumps, tanks, motors and other equipment used in water treatment, transmission and distribution; knowledge of procedures used in laboratory analyses of water; mechanical ability; interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills; ability to keep operational records and prepare reports; ability to utilize computer software. | |||||||||||
| EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: | |||||||||||
| General Experience: | |||||||||||
| Three (3) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of a chemical physical water treatment plant (Class 3 or above). | |||||||||||
| Special Experience: | |||||||||||
| One (1) year of the General Experience must have included performing chemical and biochemical analyses of water. | |||||||||||
| Substitution Allowed: | |||||||||||
| College training in chemistry, public health, civil, mechanical,or electrical engineering may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling six (6) months of experience to a maximum of two (2) years for an Associates Degree. | |||||||||||

| WORKING CONDITIONS: | |||||||||||
| Incumbents in this class may be exposed to extreme weather conditions, loud and potentially dangerous machinery, working with chemicals and exposure to toxic fumes and may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and work in uncomfortable positions. | |||||||||||
