In the Department of Transportation this class is accountable for supervising the work of crews engaged in a phase of highway operations or maintenance as indicated by the parenthetical title of the class.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the limited supervision of a Transportation General Supervisor or other employee of higher grade; may work under the functional supervision of another Transportation Supervisor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Supervises Department of Transportation Crew Leaders and Department of Transportation Maintainers; may exercise functional supervision over other Department of Transportation Supervisors.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work of staff; provides staff training and assistance; conducts performance evaluations; determines priorities and plans crews work; establishes and maintains crew procedures; develops or makes recommendations on development of policies and standards; acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; prepares reports and correspondence; monitors use of equipment, materials, supplies and contractual services; maintains cost records; maintains necessary precautions for safety of employees and the public; supervises snow and ice work; requisitions supplies and materials; performs related duties as required.
BRIDGE MAINTENANCE: Supervises rigging of staging, cleaning and painting of metal, replacement of bridge timber, building and demolition of temporary wooden structures, gunite repairs, pouring and surfacing of concrete, drilling of concrete on stone and driving or removal of rivets; supervises electric or acetylene welding and cutting, repairs to gears, shafts, bearings and other mechanical parts of a drawbridge and other equipment used in bridge work.
SIGN SHOP: Supervises sign shop crew engaged in manufacturing of traffic signs, traffic control devices (regulatory, warning, guide, construction and maintenance signs), portable sign mounts, channelizing devices, hand signal devices, vehicle decals and miscellaneous signs; supervises manufacturing of signs using silk screening, spray painting, aluminum and wood preparation and cutting, adhering reflective and non-reflective sheeting and carpentry; orders materials, maintains inventory, trains new employees and plans daily work assignments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:
Considerable knowledge of relevant agency policies and procedures; considerable knowledge of relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations; considerable knowledge of safety precautions; considerable knowledge of winter road maintenance; some knowledge of first aid; some knowledge of personnel rules; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; supervisory ability.
BRIDGE MAINTENANCE: Considerable knowledge of and ability to maintain moveable and stationary bridges; ability in use and maintenance of small tools and equipment used in bridge repairs and maintenance.
SIGN SHOP: Considerable knowledge of standard practices, supplies, materials, methods, tools and equipment used in manufacturing all types of road signs and traffic control devices; ability to lay out signs from blueprints and sketches; ability to draw blueprints when required; ability to make silk screens.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
General Experience:
Five (5) years of experience in the field indicated by the parenthetical title.
Special Experience:
One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in a lead or supervisory capacity.
Note:
For state employees in the parenthetical title Sign Shop the Special Experience is interpreted at the level of Department of Transportation Maintainer 4.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1.
Incumbents in this class will be required to accept assignment to emergency duties including snow and ice removal as required.
2.
Incumbents in this class may be required to possess appropriate current licenses or permits.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:
Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class. A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to extremes of weather conditions, frequent lifting of heavy weights, highly dangerous road and traffic conditions, poison ivy, insect bites and allergy irritants during summer months and loud and potentially dangerous machinery.
This cancels the existing title of and specification for the class of Transportation Supervisor (Bridge Maintenance) (Sign Shop) (Test Borings) in the same Salary Group TC 21 approved effective July 3, 1995. (Revised to abolish Test Borings parenthetical title)
